environment experienced by people shapes them. by means of reinforcement in order to develop in specific ways e.g. people learn to speak by copying their parents
punishment can also shape behaviour, they are less likely to repeat it if they are punished for that behaviour. unless punishment is the only attention they receive then they will continue in order to gain attention
describe the focus on scientific methods
behaviour is difficult to study and more difficult to draw scientific conclusions. specific actions are isolated and studied to find out what leads to those actions or could stop them
scientific methodology is used to ensure data is reliable
