Key Area 3.1 - Metals Flashcards
Why do metals conduct electricity
Electricity is a flow of electrons. For a substance to conduct electricity it must allow electrons to flow through it
What happens during a reaction with metals and water
-> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Group 1 and calcium
What happens during a reaction with metals and acid
-> salt + hydrogen
Metals above hydrogen line
What happens during a reaction with metals and oxygen
-> metal oxide
Group 1
What is the reactivity series

What is metallic bonding
Occurs between the atoms of metal elements. The outer electrons are delocalised. The attraction for the positive atoms for the sea of negative moving electrons holds the atoms together and allows metals to carry electricity.
