Key Area 1.5 - Chemical Formulae Flashcards
How to name a chemical compound with 2 element and Oxygen
Consists of the name of both non-oxygen elements but the last part of the second name changes to - ATE or - ITE
Examples
Mg + N2 + O2 = Magnesium Nitrate
Ca + Br + O2 = Calcium Bromate
Show the valency of each group from 1-8
Group 1 - 1 Group 2 - 2 Group 3 - 3 Group 4 - 4 Group 5 - 3 Group 6 - 2 Group 7 - 1 Group 8 - 0
Calculating the Chemical Formulae system
Symbol
Valency
Swap
Drop
Brackets around groups are essential to show that they atoms are grouped and not individual.
Ionic formulas also show charges
Formula prefixes
If a formula has a prefix, the swap and drop process does not take place! Mon Di Tri Tetra Penta Hexa
Transitional Metals
When a transition metal has a numeral next to it, that should be used as its valency during the swap and drop process I II III IV V VI
How to name a chemical compound with just 2 elements
The compound name consists of both chemical names but the last part of the second name changes to - IDE
Examples
Mg + O2 = Magnesium Oxide
C + Cl2 = Carbon Chloride
