Key Area 3.1 Flashcards
What does the central nervous system include?
The brain and spinal cord.
What does the peripheral nervous system include?
Autonomic and somatic systems
What does the SNS control?
Voluntary actions by skeletal muscles.
What does the ANS control?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, which have fibres that are antagonistic to each other.
What do sympathetic fibres do?
Speed the heart and breathing rates but slow digestive processes such as secretion of digestive juices, secretion of bile and peristalsis.
What do parasympathetic fibres do?
Slow the heart and breathing rates but speed up digestive processes such as secretion of digestive juices, secretion of bile and peristalsis.
What does the cerebellum do?
Control balance and coordination.
What does the medulla do?
Control heart rate, breathing rate and peristalsis.
What does the limbic system play a role in?
Long term memory, motivation, emotion and behaviour.
What is the cerebrum divided into?
The left and right cerebral hemispheres.
What is the cerebral cortex divided into?
Localised regions including sensory, motor and association areas.
What does the cerebral cortex receive?
Sensory information
What is the cerebral cortex involved in?
Decision making in light of experience and coordination voluntary movement.
What does the sensory area receive?
Impulses from the skin, organs and muscle.
What does the motor area send?
Impulses to the skeletal muscles.
