Key Area 2- Transport across cell membranes Flashcards
What are phospholipids?
Molecules that make up the cell membrane with proteins
What is passive transport?
Movement of molecules down a concentration gradient that requires no energy
What does turgid mean?
A plant cell has filled with water
What does plasmolysed mean?
A plant cell that has shrunk as water has moved out of it
What is active transport?
The movement of molecules against the concentration gradient that requires energy
Definition of diffusion
The movement of molecules from higher concentration to lower concentration, down a concentration gradient
Definition of osmosis
The movement of water from higher water concentration to lower water concentration, through a selectively permeable membrane
What are cell membranes made of?
Phospholipids and proteins
What can pass through the cell membrane?
Water, glucose, carbon dioxide, oxygen
What can’t pass through the cell membrane?
starch, sucrose
What does shrink mean?
A animal cell that has shrunk because water has moved out of the cell
What does bursts means?
A animal cell has burst because water has moved into the cell
What are the two types of passive transport?
Diffusion and osmosis
What is the term used to describe the cell membrane?
Selectively permeable
