Key Area 1- Cell Structure Flashcards
What is the cell wall?
Structure surrounding a cell that protects and helps the cell to keep its shape
What is the cell ultrastructure?
All parts that make up a cell
What does the cell membrane do?
Controls what substances/materials enters and leaves the cell
What does selectively permeable mean?
Only certain molecules can pass through
What is a chloroplast?
Small green discs in plant cells where photosynthesis takes place
Function of cytoplasm?
Where chemical reactions take place
What does the nucleus do?
Controls cell activity and stores DNA as chromosomes
Function of ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis
Function of mitochondria?
Site of aerobic respiration
What is an organelle?
Any part of the cell found in the cytoplasm
What is cellulose?
The chemical that makes up plant cell walls (DOES NOT MAKE UP CELL WALLS IN FUNGAL AND BACTERIAL CELLS)
What is the vacuole?
A structure found in the cytoplasm that contains cell sap in plants
Name the 4 different types of cells
Animal, plant, fungal and bacterial
What cells is the cell wall found in?
All except animal
What cells have a cell membrane?
All cells
What cells contain cytoplasm?
All cells
What cells contain mitochondria?
All except bacteria
What cells contain chloroplasts?
Only plant cells
What cells contain vacuoles?
Plant and fungal
What cells contain ribosomes?
All cells
What cells contain plasmids?
Bacterial
What cells contain a nucleus?
All except bacterial
Function of plasmids?
Small circular DNA molecules that contain genes
What happens to bacteria cells DNA?
It floats around in the cytoplasm as a large circular DNA molecule
