Key Area 2: Replication Of DNA Flashcards
1
Q
What two enzymes control DNA replication?
A
DNA polymerase
Ligase
2
Q
What is needed by DNA polymerase to allow replication to begin?
A
A primer
3
Q
What is the order of stages in DNA replication?
A
- DNA unwinds to form two template strands
- Primers bind to complementary bases by hydrogen bonds
- DNA nucleotides flood in and join with complementary bases is hydrogen bonds
- The sugar-phosphate backbone is formed when DNA polymerase joined nucleotides to the 3’ end of the new DNA strand
- DNA fragments found on the lagging strand are sealed together using ligase
- Each daughter strand rewinds
4
Q
How is DNA polymerase restricted in it’s role?
A
It’s restricted as it can only join nucleotides to the 3’ end
5
Q
What is the role of ligase in overcoming the restriction of DNA polymerase?
A
It can join fragments on the lagging strand
