Key Area 1.3 Gene expression Flashcards
What is gene expression
-Gene expression is basically the making of proteins
-Gene expression invlove having to transcribe and translate DNA sequences ( not all genes in a cell are expressed)
-Transcription and translation involve 3 different types of RNA:
mRNA-Messenger
tRNA-Transfer
rRNA-Ribosomel
What is RNA
- RNA is the second type of nucleic acid on the cell
- RNA plays a vital role in the production of proteins
- RNA is very similar to DNA except deoxyribose sugar is replaced with ribose sugar
What is messenger RNA (mRNA)-ROLE
Messenger RNA is formed in the nucleus from free nucleotides and carries a copy of the DNA code to the nucleus to the ribosome (where protein synthesis occurs)
What is transfer RNA (tRNA)-ROLE
Transfer RNA collects amino acids and then brings them to the ribosome so that proteins can be created
What is Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)-ROLE
Ribosomal RNA combines with proteins to create ribosomes- the organelle is responsible for the assembly of proteins following the code of DNA
What is transcription
- transcription is the synthesis of mRNA from a section of the DNA
- the transcription begins at a region of DNA called a promoter
- A gene is a section of DNA which carries the code for the production of one protein
What is RNA polymerase
RNA polymerase is responsible for transcriptions. RNA
