Key Accommodation Considerations Flashcards
State the main accommodation considerations that need to be adhered to when constructing animal accommodation
Type of accommodation, access to accommodation, size of accommodation & location of the accommodation
Which factors should be considered when considering the type of accommodation that is being built?
The construction materials used need to be suitable for the intended species and must be non-toxic & the accommodation needs to be strong and weatherproof
Why is the size of the accommodation a significant factor in animal welfare?
Animal(s) need to be housed comfortably, it needs to be suitable for the intended purpose, it needs to meet species requirements & it needs to meet a suitable stocking density (if it is intended for livestock)
Why is the location of the accommodation important?
Acceptable predator - prey proximity, needs to be away from direct sunlight and draughts & it needs to be away from busy areas
State the significance of the accommodation being accessible
Allows water and food access (according to species preference), easy to clean and maintain & doors or lids need to be opened or closed without obstruction
Why are water sources a significant part of animal housing?
Natural water sources (such as streams or ponds) can be visually appealing and promote some natural behavior patterns
State a disadvantage of water sources in enclosures
Some species and handlers may harmed by the water source if it is insecure (e.g. the handler or animal may fall into the water source)
