Animals in Education Flashcards
State four ethical issues with using animals in education
Children could distress the animals, allergies, children could harm the animals, animals could ingest harmful products
Which piece of legislation relates to animals in education (AAE)?
Animal Welfare (Licensing Activities Involving Animals) 2018
What does AAE stand for?
Animal Assisted Education
State some actions that can be involved in AAE
Lessons about caring for animals with animals present, canine reading programmes, handling/husbandry clinics
State an example of AAE being shown in the media
Use of therapy animals in Educating Greater Manchester
Name two species that are NOT suitable for AAE
Chinchillas & rabbits
Why are chinchillas and rabbits unsuitable for AAE?
The oil off of our hands damages their coats & they could become highly stressed if over/incorrectly handled
Outline some factors that need to be considered when viewing a therapy/AAE prospect?
Temperament, suitability, species, purpose (what exactly they will be doing), size, diet, housing/living arrangements, safety (animal/handler/user), environment, breed
Can certain species be considered suitable and why?
No certain species can not be deemed as collectively “suitable” because each individual will have varying sociabilities/temperaments (within a range) and may possess some genetic behavioural issues (e.g. gentetic anxiety)
Why may some animals find the travelling portion of AAE distressing?
Noise of the car, unfamiliar setting, travel cage will have strange scents (unfamiliar), inappropriate handling may cause discomfort, limited space, restricted movement, minimal light (small holes in carriers)
Why are dogs commonly used for AAE?
Generally more friendly & interactive, higher user - companion engagement, children don’t feel judged (AAE reading programmes), easily cared for/maintained (clearer body language/more readily accessible needs - e.g. waste/food)
