KETONES Flashcards
WHAT ARE KETONES?
Ketones are a source of caloric energy in the body that are used by the brain, heart
WHAT IS KETOSIS?
Being in a metabolic state whereby your body is accumulating ketones in the bloodstream faster than they are being burned.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A STATE OF NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS?
Ketosis requires a dietary macronutrient composition of approximatly:
60-80% Fat
15-30% Protein
5-10% Carbs
*With carb intake, experts recommend a hard limit of 50 grams per day for active folks, and 20 grams per day for the inactive
WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL KETOSIS?
Natural response of the body to low glucose
WHAT IS KEOACIDOSIS?
Pathologic state of uncontrolled ketone production.
Ketones build up in the blood causing a drop in pH (acidosis) in the blood, which can become fatal.
Typically a complication of insufficient insulin use in persons with type 1 diabetes or advanced type 2 diabetes who have lost the ability to produce insulin.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER POTENTIAL TRIGGERS OF KETOACIDOSIS IN UNCONTROLLED DIABETES?
STRESS HEART ATTACK ALCOHOL DRUG ABUSE CERTAIN MEDICATIONS SEVERE DEHYDRATION ACUTE MAJOR ILLNESS SUCH AS SEPSIS OR PANCREATITIS
CAN KETOACIDOSIS BE CAUSED BY A KETOGENIC DIET?
IT IS VERY UNLIKELY, ALTHOUGH NOT IMPOSSIBLE
