usually due to corneal abrasion or prolonged contact lens wear
or dry eyes
what is keratitis
inflammation of the cornea
bacterial presentation
bacterial: red eye, pain, photophobia, foreign body sensation, reduced visual acuity
what is seen on examination of bacterial keratitis
red eye, epithelial defect, white cell infiltrate, oedema
viruses that cause keratitis and their presentation
HSV
primary infection usually v mild, childhood after URTI. 2nd infection = DENDRITIC ULCER. seen using fluorescein stain
VZV - HERPES ZOSTER OPTHALMICUSs. years to decades after primary -> flu like illness, neuralgia, maculopapular rash over opthalmic branch of trigerminal
management bacterial
intensive abx. may need admission of not compliant
topical steroids
management viral
refer
topical antivirals (HSV)
systemic antivirals (VZV)
topical steroids
