1969: 10.9 million

What are birth rates like?
High number of birth rates per woman. 4.6 children per woman (almost double global average)
What are death rates like?
Falling. In 2012 the Population Reference Bureau estimated that infant mortality had risen to 47/1000.
What is life expectancy like?
Steadily increasing. In 2012, life expectancy was 62 years.
What has a rapid population increase done?
It has put heavy pressure on Kenya’s resources.
What is the youth dependancy ratio like?
High. Over 40% or the population is under 15.
What are the consequences for farmers and people living in rural areas?
There is a low amount of land per capita available to them. This impacts 70% of the population as that is how many people live in rural areas.
67% of farmers think that the size of their land is not sufficient for their children.
What else is becoming a problem?
Youth unemployment.
