Organization which empowers women
Education for all Morocco
- Addresses high illiteracy rates in Morocco, with a focus on ensuring that as many girls as possible have access to education and do not have to travel far to go to school.
- Recruits international volunteers to join the organization and teach girls in various subjects, and collaborating with schools that fundraiser for the organization.
- It had experienced a lot of growth, growing from 10 to 200 from 2007 to 2015.
- 100% pass rate for all the girls supported by the organisation, and of them 50 girls have made it to university.
An organization which empowers indigenous groups
Rainforest connection
- Many indigenous groups live in places experiencing high levels of illegal deforestation, which depletes the forest of its resources and limits their access to food.
- Endangered by gunmen
- Monitoring system is used to detect dangers and protect the forests. A machine learning programme detects dangers and forest rangers are sent to deal with the issue.
- Indigenous people can now focus more on their families, culture and survival as they no longer have to spend lots of time patrolling, and are likely to have better access to food, since the food resources are not being depleted.
A government which empowers minority groups
European Parliament
- In the 6th December 2017, the European Parliament hosted an event to empower disabled people and discuss ways they could fully participate in society.
- Brought together over 600 activists and delegates from organizations representing people with disabilities from across Europe, MEPs and representatives of other EU institutions.
- They discussed how people with disabilities could participate in public and political life, including their right to vote, the implementation of the UN Convention in the Rights of persons with disabilities and the European Disability strategy of 2020-2030, which aims to promote accessibility, participation, higher employment, inclusive education and health services.
- Addresses UN goals of Reducing Inequalities and promoting Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
A glocalised brand
McDonalds
- India in 2017, McDonalds introduced a branded menu that included products with an Indian cuisine, e.g. masala dosa burger with molaga podi sauce. Combines continental and Indian options.
- Initially introduced to Mumbai but then introduced all across India.
- 2 decades ago, McDonalds also launched the Aloo Tikki burger, which became one of the fastest selling products in it’s stores.
- Most dishes grilled rather than fried.
Homogenization of culture
Dubai
- In the 1980s, Dubai was a small fishing settlement, but in recent years it has developed into an advanced global hub.
- Time space convergence, improvements in technology, wealthy travelling migrants who bring an increased demand for globally established products, as well as TNCs, have all impacted Dubai’s culture
- Falconry and horseriding are being replaced by more global sports, such as rugby, cricket and F1.
- Traditional cuisine and food stores have mostly been replaced by food chains such as Carrefour, which originates from France
- Western clothing becoming increasingly worn due to retail chains and fashion trends being spread globally via the internet.
- Cars replace camels
Protecting cultures
UNESCO
- United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, central to the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.
- Headquarters based in Paris, and France has 10 UNESCO biosphere reserves and 33 world heritage sites.
