what is a backup?
a copy of a file that contains data and makes sure that the work is not lost
How can you backup your work?
save the work every few minutes
use passwords to protect data
keep a copy of the work in different locations
what do businesses use to backup their files?
tape drives with magnetic tape
tapes are used in rotation - ‘grandfather’,’father’, ‘son’ backup schemes are used
what is an archive?
a copy of data that is stored separately for permanent safekeeping
archive are generally used for for data that is not currently in use
what are the differences between backups and archive
data in a backup file is in current use, data in archive is not
Backups are made at frequent intervals, archives are made at loner intervals
backups can be used for disaster recovery, archives are of little use in disaster recovery
Why are paper documents difficult to steal compared to electronic?
paper is bulky, electronic are small and can be quickly and easily copied
How can data be misused?
- gossiping with others about it
- selling contact details to advertising companies
- using other peoples data to obtain money
What may criminals use other peoples data for?
- obtain a bank card or credit card
- use card to buy items or services
What helps reduce card fraud?
the ‘chip and pin’ systems
What is identify theft?
someone using the details of another person to pretend to be them
thefts will buy items or services
How can you protect your data?
- hide key buttons when entering PIN
- keep computers in secure room
- unique password and set different passwords for different things
Where should you store your electronics that contain important data?
in a secure room with lockable doors and windows
How do you keep a secure PIN/password?
- not be written down anywhere
- changed regularly
- be different for every account
What is encryption?
encryption scrambles data so that it cannot be understood unless it is unscrambled.
What is decryption?
a decryption key is needed to unscramble the data from an encryption format
