A

Kedah is located in the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia.

To the north , Kedah borders the state of Perlis and Thailand.

It borders the state of Perak to the south and Penang to the southwest.

Describe kedah’s landscape, the lake and the islands landscape.

A

Mostly flat areas of rice paddy fields.
Meanwhile, the northeastern and southeastern part of the state is mountainous.
Some limestone hills, forests, beautiful islands.

The Pedu lake is the largest man make lake in the state.

Tree top walk Sungai Sedim , the world’s longest rainforest canopy walk.

Langkawi island consists of flat plains with some limestone hill.
Two thirds of the island is dominated by forest covered mountains , hills and natural vegetation.

A

The population: 2,19 million (2020)
Majority citizens : malays about 70%, Chinese 12% , Indians 7%. The rest small group of OA / aborigines

Religion: majority Muslims , followed by Buddhist.

What language do they speak?

A

Majority speaks kedah malay and have other several dialects , known to locals as northern dialect.

Chinese in Kedah speaks Mandarin and hokkien and other dialects.

Also a large community of ethnic Siamese using Thai language.

However is english is widely spoken.

What is kedah’s unique culture

A

Kedahan malays have their own unique culture in food, songs, dances.

Local traditional songs and dance:
Tarian cinta sayang (opening days for important events)

Lagu2 berendoi (group of men of singing traditional kedahan folk songs to a new born baby in celebration of the child)

Wayang kulit (shadow play , an old cultural entertainment using shadows cast by carved puppets in relaying mythical parables of good vs evil)

Silat (form of traditional Malay self defense is normally performed at various occasions such as weddings and functions)

Laksa Kedah (northern rice noodles with shredded fish Assam flavour)

Gulai termenung (rice with mackeral curry)

Gulai nangka (basmati rice with creamy curried jackfruit)

A

Out of respect, one should wear loose dress / clothes , with covered arms and legs since the majority are Muslims in Kedah.

  • rice bowl Malaysia
  • accounting half of Malaysia’s total production of rice
  • the state government banned the conversion of paddy fields to housing and industrial lots to protect the rice industry.
  • tourism particularly in Langkawi is important
  • Kedah is directing it’s economy towards automative and aerospace industries because of low cost labours and nearby Penang international airport.

A

The Pedu lake is the largest man make lake in the state.
12km long lake
Located approximately 5k from the Malaysian -thai border,
1.5 hour drive from Alor Setar.

Tree top walk Sungai Sedim is the world’s longest rainforest canopy walk
Length of 925 metres and a height of 26 meters above the forest floors.
Located in Sungai Sedim recreational park, about 30 minutes drive from the town of Kulim, Kedah / 1.5 hour drive from Penang Butterworth
