KE & GPE Flashcards
What is Kinetic energy?
The energy an object has because it it moving
What is the calculation for kinetic energy?
Ke = 1/2 x Mass x Velocity (squared)
Ke = 1/2 MV (squared)
Mass is measured in Kilograms - kg
Velocity is measured in metres per second - m/s
Kinetic Energy is measured in joules - J
Rearrange the kinetic theory equation for mass and velocity
Can’t really write here, look in book
What does the GPE of an object depend on?
Mass, height and gravitational field strength
As a bungee jumper falls would he gain or lose GPE?
lose
As the elastic cord of a bungee jumper pulls him back up after he jumped would he he lose or gain GPE?
Gain
What is the equation for GPE
Gravitational Potential Energy = Mass X Gravitational Field Strength X Height
GPE= MGH
Mass is measured in kilograms - kg
Gravitational Field Strength is measured in Newton’s per kilogram (N/kg), usually taken as 10N/kg on Earth
Height is measured in Metres - m
GPE is measured in joules - J
