What is Kathakali
Kathakali is performed in Kerala, South India.

Kathakali is deeply religious based on the richest literature of kerala, inspired by beautiful and highly ethical stories of the Puranas, which tell of gods, Goddesses, Heroes.
Kathakali was influenced by old sanskrit dramas called Kudiyattam and the dramatic stories of Krishna Atam.
Malayali poet, Rsja of Kottarakkara 1st introed Malayam literature and dramatic lyrical compositions into Kathakali.

Pure dance movements are arranged according to the talam embellished with small pieces of syllabic words like the jathis in bharathanatyam.
syllabic words are recited and played by the drummer to accompany the dancer.
In kathakali, after every 4 lines (khandam/caranam) there is a climax finale called Kalasam.
Long converstional rhythm is very imp. for dramatic sequences of pure dance.
To aid dramatic interpretation in kathakali the dancer uses the expression of their eyes, eyebrows, face, facial muscles hand gestures, swings and postures of the arms and body.
In Kathakali, use of eye and eyebrow expression is more used than in bharathanatyam, kuchipudi or any other dance.
Kathakali employs a wide range movements over 800 combinations to aid interpretation.
Traditionally ontl men take part in Kathakali. Yound handsome men or teenagers used to play feminine roles but now girls and young woman play their part.
Sloka is the recititation of certain incidents that isn’t acted by the dancer.
The pathams are the dialogue of the characters.
The songs are composed in Carnatic music accompanied by drums.
