What is Bharathanatyam?
Bharatanatyam is the dance of South India.
“Bharatha” from Bharathanatyam is composed from
- Bhavam
- Ragam
- Thalam
Natyam means the combination of dancing and acting.
Before dancing Bharathanatyam one must perform namaskaaram to seeks blessings from Mother Earth and apologise for how they will stamp hard on her when dancing.
Bharatanatyam is the perfect harmony of the body and spirit.
There are three types of dance categories in Bharathanatyam
- Nirutham
- Niruthyam
- Natyam
Nirutham is pure dance. The movements have no meaning and are choreographed for beauty and aesthetic.
Nirutham adds elegance to Bharathanatyam. It shows pure techiniques of adavus, complexities of timing and rhythm.
Niruthyam involves emotions, expression and abhinayam. Niruthyam is a mix of adavus, korvais performed with some abhinayam in between to convey small ideas.
Natyam consists of a combination of dancing and acting. The dancer uses their imagination to bring a story to life using abhinayam.
In Bharathanatyam there are four modes of expression:
Angika - physical movement and gesture expession
Vachika - vocal expression
Aaharya - costume and accessory expression
sathvika - exhibition of emotions with inner feelings
There are nine shringara rasas:
Shringara - love
Hasya - Humour
Karuna - Pity
Kroda - Hatred
Veera - Heroism
Bhayanaka - Fera
Bibhatsa - Disgust
Adhbuta - Wonder
Shanta - Peace
