A political pamphlet written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, which laid out the principles of communism
Proletariat
The working-class people who sell their labour for wages - the social class having no significant ownership of the means of production
Bourgeoisie
The capitalist class who own the means of production and exploit the working class
Class struggle
The ongoing conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat
Surplus value
The difference between the value of goods produced by workers and the wages paid to them - which is exploited by the capitalist class
Socialism
A political and economic system in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the workers or the state - with the goal of achieving greater equality and social justice
Communism
A political and economic system in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the community as a whole - with the goal of achieving a classless society and the abolition of private property
