Q

What is transfer of VHF communications?

A

An aircraft shall be advised by the appropriate aeronautical station to change from one radio frequency to another in accordance with agreed procedures. In the absence of such adice, the aircraft shall notify the aeronautical station before such a change takes place.

When establishing initial contact on, or when leaving a VHF frequency, an air raft station shall transmit such information as ay be prescribed by the appropriate authority.

What is the procedure for transfer of communication?

A

a. CONTACT … (freq);
b. AT (or OVER) (time or place) CONTACT (unit call sign) (freq)
c. IF NO CONTACT (instructions);
d. *STAND BY (freq) FOR (unit call sign)
e. REQUEST CHANGE TO (freq)
f. FREQUENCY CHANGE APPROVED
g. MONITOR (unit call sign) (freq)
h. ** MONITORING (freq)
i. WHEN READY CONTACT (unit call sign) (freq)
j. REMAIN THIS FREQUENCY

  • an aircraft may be requested to STAND BY on a freq when it is intended that the ATS unit will initiate communications and to “MONITOR” a frequency when information is being broadcast thereon such as an ATIS broadcast

** Denotes pilot transmissio. For transfers of communication within one ATS unit, the call sign of the ATS unit may be omitted, when so authorized by the competent authority.

Q

What is Issue of Clearance and Read Back Requirements?

A
  • A clearance may vary in content from a detailed description of the route and levels to be flown to a bried landing clearence
  • Controllers should pass a clearence slowly and clearly since pilot needs to write it down and wasteful repetition will thus be avoided
  • Whenever possible a route clearance should be passed to an aircraft before start up
  • Controllers should avoid passing a clearance to a pilot engaged in complicated taxi manoeuvres and on no occasion should a clearance be passed when the pilot is engaged in line up or take- off manoeuvres.

Q

What are the rules regarding the words “TAKE OFF”

A

The words “TAKE OFF” are used only when an aircraft is cleared for take- off, or when cancelling a take- off clearance. At other times the word “DEPARTURE” or “AIRBORNE” is used. Pilots only use the word TAKE- OFF when acknowledgning their clearance to do so.

Q

What shall the pilots do if encountering severe weather conditions during flight?

A

If necessary to change course or FL, they shall contact ATC with “WEATHER DEVIATION REQUIRED” (indicates that priority is needed) so that ATC can maintain safe separation between traffic. When necessary, a pilot should use the urgency call “PAN PAN” (preferably spoken 3 times)
