Kant's Critique Of Ontological Arguments Flashcards
Kant’s major criticism of Descartes’ argument was that, in his words, “existence is not a ?”, existence is not a ? or an ? of something.
Predicate.
Characteristic.
Attribute.
Kant’s point, when applied to the ontological arguments, is that when we’re thinking of ?, whether it’s Anselm’s or Gaunilo’s view, we’re thinking of a ?
God.
Concept.
Kant argues that adding “?” to the idea of a God, as a ?, doesn’t add anything new to what we understand by God; it’s, instead, a comment on whether the God we have described really exists. In the same way, an imaginary 100 “?” isn’t “added to” if we substitute it for a real 100 “thalers”.
Exists.
Predicate.
Thalers.
It could be argued that necessary existence is a ? - but it can only be predicated of God. We have to accept that God exists ?, in order to come to the conclusion that God exists necessarily.
Predicate.
Necessarily.
