KAMIKAZE x THE EMIGREE Flashcards
similarities
- irregular rhythm (no rhyme scheme)
- conflict isolates people
- distance
- views can’t be changed
how do they both use an irregular rhythm, no rhyme scheme
E- suggests everyday speech BUT due to no rhyme scheme it could suggest chaos, so narrator feels unsettled where they are living even though it’s safer
K-drifting reminiscence that constantly shifts focus from one character to another
how do they both include conflict isolating people
E- describes her native lang by saying ‘i can’t get it off my tongue’ which suggests she is instinctively retaining her home, so by doing this, she is remembering her homeland which gives her comfort, LOVES HER HOMELAND
K- not welcome home, negative semantic field of ‘never’ ‘not’ to reveal how hostile his family is when he abandons his mission, ‘he must’ve wondered which had been the better way to die’ declarative sentence emphasises cruelty of family, homeland has no comfort towards him
how do they both include distance
E-metaphor ‘theres no way back at all’ implies distance from her and her homeland as she can’t go back because war has altered her country so much (could be she had to leave, DISTANCE)
K- enjambment ‘we too learned/ to be silent’ implies children were being brainwashed by propaganda ‘they treated him as though he no longer existed’
how do they both include views not being changed
E-‘branded with an impression of sunlight’, impression suggests that deep down they know the whole situation isn’t positive (‘sunlight’), ‘branded’ suggests her permanence to her view, can’t be changed
K- (society’s views) ‘figure of eight’, cowardice or surrender was a shame to wartime Japan
