Kamikaze Analysis Flashcards
Nature quotations and effect
“A tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous.” Connotations of darkness and danger emphasising the power if nature. Power of patriotism presented in “dark prince” - this quotation could be a symbol of death as after this point he is seen as dead - this quotation also has a full stop to emphasise the pain further. Even a kamikaze pilot - the epitome of bravery- senses, the danger of nature. It’s deserving of respect and honour, like a soldier to emphasise its significance.
“Green- blue translucent sea” - constant theme of nature could imply that the beauty of nature made him turn back
“Flashing silver as their bellies swivelled in the sun” sibilance to imitate the sea - elegant and graceful tone
“ a figure of eight” symbol of infinity. This may be used to imply the eternal nature of nature that it will continue forever. Nature is infinite in comparison to the transient nature of humanity. Life is brief, war and honour will be forgotten. Nature is more powerful than mankind.
Patriotism quotations and effect
“Powerful incantations(spell)” - propaganda —>brainwashed by government
“Like a huge flag”
“My mother never spoke again” - the power of the patriotism makes the father question whether he should have just died. It was such a dishonour he may as well not exist
“Till we too gradually learned” - it isn’t what they actually believe, it is just society’s expectations. How if you dishonour it you may as well die
Juxtaposition as a constant theme of patriotism is conveyed, but he doesn’t go through with it
“the little fishing boats strung out like bunting”
“Which had been the better way to die” The father is left feeling as if he would have rather died, patriotism has caused his family to abandon him.
Quotations with irony and effect
“Her father embarked at sunrise” - embarked: setting off on a long journey; sunrise: new beginning
“journey into history” - ironic as his death won’t be remembered
“As though he no longer existed” - ironic as he returned alive but they all treat him like he is dead
Structure in Kamikaze
No full stops until the end so full stop could be a symbol of pain as the later years for the father were painful
Tight control of structure - all have 6 lined stanzas to reflect tight military and societal expectations
Free verse and enjambment to express the pilots freedom of expression to reflect the freedom the pilot wants to have
Narrative voice
Unreliable as a story told from someone else to her
Who wrote Kamikaze
Beatrice Garland
Quotations for identity
“ my mother never spoke again in his presence, nor did she meet his eyes” - “eyes” are the windows to the soul - she doesn’t want to see the person he has become. She is ashamed of her own husband. The impact of conflict is ongoing - passed down from generation to generation, she’s so patriotic that she will not speak to her husband.
“One way journey into history” - originally very proud to embark on this journey. Hyperbole to illustrate the pilots pride in serving his country. She uses FREE VERSE to reflect the pride many Kamikaze pilots felt during WW2
“ he must’ve wondered which had been the better way to die” - soldiers, and this civilisation were controlled by propaganda by the government. Written in a detached third person view point which might suggest this week. It doesn’t agree with this culture view.
“This was no longer the father we loved”
