Kaiser Flashcards
Problems with the new German Empire (6)
~ Want different leaders ~ Want independence - proud ~ Language barrier ~ Each place could have different laws ~ War between countires ~ Can't trade between them (taxes on trade)
Advantages the ruler of the new German empire might have (6)
~ More defences ~ More resources ~ More power and money ~ Stronger army - stronger empire ~ Central control - easier to control ~ Bring together the German States
Problem with power in Germany (and why)
Too complex - Kaiser could dismiss the Reichstag and Military, but they could both go against him as well
Character of the Kaiser
~ very ambitious - wanted to expand empire quickly
~ wanted to prove he was a strong leader
~ wanted a big involvement in politics
~ controlled armed forces
German Industrialisation - later (2)
~ Don’t have to spend time developing technology
~ Industries had laws protecting them from large scale industry (which makes it later)
German Industrialisation - faster (+, -)
+ no time developing technology
- no time for people to adjust (e.g. no time to learn new skills in factories)
German Industrialisation - New Industries
~ World leader of; steel, chemical and electrical
~ In 1850, there was a great expansion of coal and iron production
~ In 1890 - rapid development of electricity and chemical industry
~ In 1914, industries grew at a faster rate than Britain
Consequences of Industrialisation
~ Poor living/ working conditions
~ Anger amongst poor workers (factory owners making lots of money)
~Calls for greater democracy ( Rich capitalists dictating laws and governments)
Consequences of industrialisation for Kaiser
Rise in socialism and many people joined trade unions
How did the Kaiser respond?
Using reformation and repression (put main socialists in prison but tried to please the public)
Weltpolitik
Aimed to transform Germany into a global power (through: diplomacy, acquisition of colonies & development of a larger Navy)
Navy Laws - aims
Make Germany’s navy big enough to challenge the Royal Navy to stop it having total dominance
Navy Laws - Britain’s response
‘Two power standard’ meant Britain should have a navy bigger than or equal to the next two navies combined
~ So they increased their amount of ships also
Navy Laws - consequences (relationship)
Isolation and tension between Germany and Britain (other countries started building up navies as well)
Navy Laws - consequences (public)
Public needed money to be spent on them as industrialisation meant that conditions were very poor
~ waste of money
