KA5 Symbiosis Flashcards
What is symbiosis?
An intimate relationship which has co-evolved between members of two different species
Describe the difference between parasitism and mutualism
In a parasitic relationship, a parasite benefits in terms of energy gain and nutrients, and its host is harmed due to the loss of these resources. In a mutualistic relationship, both partner species benefit in the interdependent relationship
Without a host, a parasite _____?
Cannot survive due to it’s limited metabolism
How are parasites transmitted
Parasites can be transmitted by direct contact, resistant stages, vectors and secondary hosts
Describe resistant stages
Some parasites have stages in their lifecycle resistant to adverse environmental conditions and are able to survive for long periods of time
What is a vector
A carrier which allows a parasite to pass from one host to another
some parasitic life cycles have evolved to have _____?
secondary hosts
