KA1a Food Supply Flashcards
what is meant by food security
the ability to access sufficient quality and quantity of food to maintain a healthy population
why is there an increased demand for food?
human population growth has increased the demand for food and the concern for food security
what should food production be?
sustainable and not degrade the natural resources needed for agriculture
what factors does food production depend on
light intensity, growing area, water availability, available nutrients, competition
state three methods of improving crop yield
growing higher yielding cultivars, use fertilisers, protecting crops from disease, pests, and competition
why does livestock yield less food per unit area than crops
90% of energy is lost between each trophic level in a food chain. therefore the shorter the food chain, the more energy is held in the food which means livestock produce less energy per unit area than crops due to energy loss between trophic levels
