What was Jung’s relationship to Freud
Studied under him and collab’d then broke away over tension re: sexuality/libido
Name the component parts of Jung’s model of the mind (incl. brief desc)
Ego ➝ conscious mind, gives continuity to personal identify
the Self ➝ wider than ego
Conscious ➝ what is knowable, on the surface
Personal unconscious ➝ what is repressed and unacceptable to an individual
Collective unconscious ➝ a shared, innate source of collective material, often primitive; shared by all humanity
Archetypes ➝ universal themes and symbols that exist in the collective unconscious
What is the nature of Jung’s model of the mind? (teleological)
personality develops through one’s life with an ultimate end goal
What are the goals of analytic Ψ ? (overarching and sub)
attainment of the self through individuation
Persona ➝ strive to be integrate your persona with your real self, to be come authentic
Ego ➝ to learn from the unconscious
The Shadow ➝ acknowledge, accept and love the embarrassing parts of you
Anima/animus ➝ empower both masc and fem side of your nature to benefit from both
Archetypes ➝ identify yours and work to eliminate its power over you
What are the differences between the concepts of the Ego and the Self?
- Ego is central but not entire psyche
- Self is total psych ∴ ego is part of self
- Ego is entirely conscious, the self is both conscious and unconscious
What is the purpose of individuation
to unify the self and the ego, the conscious and unconscious
What period of life is the focus of Freud’s work? Of Jung’s?

What are some of the archetypes within the collective unconscious?
- Persona: a mask we adopt for social/business purposes
- Shadow: the repressed darker nature of our selves
- Anima: the feminine
- Animus: the masculine
- Self: individuation
- The Mother: nurturing, comforting
- the father: authority figure, stern, powerful
- the child: longing for innocence, rebirth, salvation
- wise old man: guidance, knowledge
- hero: champion, defender, rescuer
- maiden: innocence, desire, purity
- trickster: deceiver, liar, trouble maker

Structure held within the collective unconscious to help in the development during various stages of life

What does Jung mean by “complex”?
psychological disturbance
