Jung Flashcards
Jung strongly asserted that the most
important portion of the unconscious comes
from the distant past of human existence
Collective unconscious
are those that are sensed
by the ego, whereas unconscious elements
have no relationship with the ego
Conscious images
as the center of consciousness, but
not the core of personality
Ego
embraces all repressed, forgotten, or
subliminally perceived experiences of
an individual
Personal unconscious
are largely personal, but
they may also be partly derived from
humanity’s collective experience
Complexes
emotionally toned conglomeration of
associated ideas
Complexes
has roots in the ancestral past of
the entire species/ Jung’s most
controversial and distinct concept
Collective unconscious
ancient or archaic images that derive
from the collective unconscious
Archetypes
an unconscious physical
impulse toward action and saw the
archetype as the psychic counterpart
to an instinct
Instinct
are the main source of
archetypal material
Dreams
- side of personality that people show to
the world
Persona
the archetype of darkness and
repression/Represents those qualities we do
not wish to acknowledge but
attempt to hide from ourselves and
others
Shadow
- feminine side of men and remains
extremely resistant to consciousness
Anima
- The masculine archetype in women
- symbolic of thinking and reasoning
Animus
- Represents two opposing forces—
fertility and nourishment on the
one hand and power and
destruction on the other.
Great mother
Fertility and power combine to
form the concept of
Rebirth
- archetype of wisdom and meaning
- symbolizes humans’ preexisting
knowledge of the mysteries of life
Wise old man
- represented in mythology and legends
as a powerful person who vanquishes
evil
Hero
- most comprehensive of all archetypes
- the archetype of archetypes because it
pulls together the other archetypes
and unites them in the process of selfrealization.
Self
a circle within a square, a
square within a circle, or any other
concentric figure. It represents the
strivings of the collective unconscious
for unity, balance, and wholeness
Mandala
- holds that present events have their origin in
previous experiences
Causality
holds that present events are motivated by goals and aspirations for the future that direct a person’s destiny
Teleology
Adaptation to the outside world involves the
forward flow of psychic
Progression
adaptation to the inner world relies on a
backward flow of psychic energy
Regression
- predisposition to act or react in
a characteristic direction
Attitudes
the turning inward of psychic energy with
an orientation toward the subjective.
Intorversion
distinguished by the turning outward of
psychic energy so that a person is
oriented toward the objective and away
from the subjective
Extraversion
tells people that
something exists
Sensing
enables them to
recognize its meaning
Thinking
tells them its
value or worth
Feeling
allows them to
know about it with out
knowing how they know
Intuition
- Logical intellectual activity that produces
a chain of ideas - focused on logic, analysis, and rationality
Thinking
rely heavily
on concrete thoughts, but they may also
use abstract ideas if these ideas have
been transmitted to them from without
(e.g., accountants)
Extraverted thinking people
react to
external stimuli, but their interpretation
of an event is influenced by internal
meanings and opinions
Introverted thinking people
- The process of evaluating an idea or
event. - evaluation of every conscious activity
Feeling
use objective data to make evaluations
* Guided by external values and widely
accepted standards of judgment
Extraverted feeling people
base their value judgments primarily on
subjective perceptions rather than objective facts.
* They make value judgments on the basis
of subjective individualized data
Introverted feeling people
- receives physical stimuli and transmits
them to perceptual consciousness - the individual’s perception of sensory
impulses
Sensing
perceive external stimuli objectively, in much the
same way that these stimuli exist in reality
Extraverted sensing people
are largely
influenced by their subjective sensations
and are guided by their interpretation of
sense stimuli
Introverted sensing people
- involves perception beyond the
workings of consciousness - more creative, often adding or
subtracting elements from conscious
sensation
Intuiting
focuses on
exploring possibilities and generating
new ideas from external source
Extraverted intuiting people
are guided
by unconscious perception of facts that
are basically subjective and have little or
no resemblance to external reality.
Introverted intuitive people
characterized by
chaotic and sporadic consciousness
Anarchic phase
characterized by
the development of the ego and by
the beginning of logical and verbal
thinking.
Monarchic phase
-the ego is divided
into the objective and subjective
Dualistic phase
desire
to live in the past
Conservative principle
- the process of becoming an individual or
whole person - Psychological rebirth, also called self realization or individuation
Self-realization
conflict between opposing processes or
tendencies is necessary to generate psychic energy
Opposition principle
The continuing redistribution of energy within
a personality; if the energy expended on certain conditions or
activities weakens or disappears, that energy is transferred elsewhere
in the personality
Equivalence principle
A tendency toward balance or equilibrium within
the personality; the ideal is an equal distribution of psychic energy
over all structures of the personality
Entropy principle
uncover elements from the personal and collective unconscious and to integrate them into consciousness in order to facilitate the process of self-realization
Dream analysis
have special
meaning for all people
Big dreams
to reveal archetypal images
emerging from the unconscious
Active imagination
