What are the 4 characteristics of Shakespearean heroes?
➢ He is a person of high degree or public importance.
➢ The heroes are often kings or military leaders; thus, their downfalls have great consequences, affecting the welfare of whole nations.
➢ They cause their own downfalls: the calamities do not happen by accident, they result from the heroes all possessing a character flaw, called a tragic flaw [hamartia].
➢ The hero doesn’t usually fall alone.
What are the 6 characteristics of Shakespearean tragedies?
➢ The protagonist dies
➢ It arouses pathos
➢ It is a story of calamity leading to the death of a person in high place.
➢ The hero is often important and aware of the significance of his mistake
➢ Man is held responsible for his mistakes. (Nemesis = just punishment)
➢ We can usually find foreshadowing of the catastrophe – the hero makes some mistake, which will bring his undoing in the end.

Epicurism taught that pleasure is the highest good and that virtue alone produces pleasure. Epicureans were fond of pleasure and luxury. They didn’t believe in the supernatural.
