Judith Jamison- Movement Examples Flashcards
Describe movements from Divining (1984), section 1, that shows the movement style.
At the very start of ‘Seeking’ the four dancers are stood in a diamond formation centre stage facing downstage left in a small parallel fourth position. They nod their head and ripple down their legs through their spine in to a flat back. They then ripple up head first it to a hyperextension of the upper spine. This is repeated multiple times. Shows the influence of Dunham.
Immediately after this they perform steps sideways to travel in a circular pathway to upstage right. As they step they sway their hips from side to side and also waft ther hands in a manner to mirror the hips. This is by Dunham
Describe movements from Divining (1984), section 2, that shows the movement style.
In ‘Resting’ the solo female dancer is stood in a dark pool of light in a small parallel second position. She reaches her arms up to parallel high and looks up. She then pushes her hands down her body to end in a primitive squat position with her hands around her shins and her head down. This movement is inspired by Horton.
The dancer starts crouched facing stage left. She stretches up in to an arabesque whilst cirlcling her right arm. This movement is continued in to a perfect verticle split. Shows the balletis technique.
Describe movements from Divining (1984), section 3, that shows the movement style.
The ensemble of dancers begin upstage left facing upstage left. They perform a sequence of flat footed stamps of the feet round to face downstage right. This is reflective of the Dunham technique.
The dancers are stood in three groups on the stage, upstage centre, downstage right and downstage left. They perform two spring points to second, hands at the hips, elbows behind the body. They then lift up in to a parallel retire. This is influenced by Dunham.
Describe a movement from Hymn (1993) that shows the subject matter.
The dancers are stood in a wedge shape tableau. Their right arm is in a high V and their left arm is in the same position but bent at the elbow. They then snap their arms into ‘bird arms’. This is an upturned classical second where the elbows are the highest point. This happens in canon from front to back. This could show how Ailey is inspiring more and more people in each generation.
Describe a movement from Forgotten Time (1989) that shows the subject matter.
Stood stage left facing stage right the male dancer holds arund the waist of the female dancer with his left hand and holds the leg of the female dancer in a very high, almost vertical leg line devant with his right. This shows Jamison’s use of classical ballet partnering and technique to demonstrate that her dancers are as everyone else’s.
Male dancer performs an en dedan turn on a high releve in classical attitude. This again shows the technical training of her dancers.
