writ of certiorari (cert.)
A writ that a superior appellate court issues in its discretion to an inferior court, ordering it to produce a certified record of a particular case it has tried, in order to determine whether any irregularities or errors occurred that justify review of the case.
habeas corpus
a legal action or writ by means of which detainees can seek relief from unlawful imprisonment.
precedent
an earlier event or action (in this case court decisions) that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances.
majority / dissent / concurring
majority- reflects the resolution agreed upon by more than half
dissent-written by a justice who voted in the minority.
concurring- agrees with the outcome of the majority opinion but not necessarily the reasoning found in the majority opinion.
