How do the family prepare for shabbat
The house is cleaned

Step 1- the betrothal- couple is engaged for 12 months

What does Jewish mourning aim to do
Show respect for the dead and to offer comfort to the loved ones
What actions do Jews take when someone dies
Tear the right side of their clothes to show a hole has been torn in the fabric of their life
What is the first period of a Jewish funeral
Lasts 24 hours and it is when close relatives stay with the body until burial as Jews believe the soul stays with the body until they are burried
What is the second phase of a Jewish wedding
Shiva it lasts 7 days mourners stay at home and mirrors are covered as the time isn’t about them.
What is the third period of Jewish mourning
Lasts 30 days and the mourners are no longer confined to be indoors however they do not attend parties or travel for pleasure
What is the forth (final) stage of Jewish mourning
They continue with their normal lives for the rest of the 11 months of the year but still don’t attend parties
What is pesach and how long does it last
Pesach is the celebration of passover and it lasts 8 days
How do Jews prepare for Pesach
They prepared unleavened bread and children are sent to clean up any crumbs around the house
why is pesach important
Is reminds the Jews that they are God’s special people
What is Rosh Hashannah
Jewish new year period in late September it lasts 10 days and ends with yom kippur
What happens during Rosh Hashannah
God judges the Jewish people over the last year and decides what the year ahead will be like

How do Jews celebrate Rosh Hashannah

What does it mean if food is Kosher
It means Jews are allowed to eat it
What does it mean if food is trefah
Jews are not allowed to eat it
Rule 1 for food to be Kosher
-Animal must have a split hoof or chew the cud (have multiple stomachs)
-Fish must have fins and scales
-birds or poultry must not be birds of prey
Rule 2 for a food to be kosher
Meat must not be mixed with dairy
Rule 3 for a food being kosher
The kitchen must be kept kosher- two sets of pots and pans etc.
What is rule 4 for a food to be kosher
Animal must be healthy, must have its throat slit by a trained Jew and the blood must be drained from it
