What is AVDC position on implants placement in dogs and cats?
AVDC disagrees with implants in dogs/cats but I haven’t seen and official position statement on AVDC website.
What is the bone to implant contact of osseointegrated endosseious implants in canine studies?
Are alveolar crestal bone levels stable with these implants?
- 73%
- Yes, radiographic and histological findings demonstrate stable alveolar crestal bone levels after loading endosseous implants for up to 12 months in a dog model.
What is the success rate of single implant crown in human vs dog?
Which technique gives better healing and survival rates: immediate or delayed implantation?
- The single implant crown survival rate in people has been documented to be 94.5% after 5 years. Little long term follow-up of implant success in dogs.
- Immediate or delayed implantation = success (studies have shown similar healing and survival rates)
When a bone graft is indicated?
When gap between alveolar wall and implant >2mm then fill with graft. I
What teeth and type of implants was describes in this case report?
This case report describes the replacement of 4 MN incisor teeth with 2 cantilevered implant bridges in a dog.
What was the technique and type of implant used?
- In phases, delayed implant
- Phase 1: Extractions and bone grafting
- Phase 2: Implant placement
- Restorative phase
- 13 months total
- used hydroxyapatite coated titanium alloy for screws to implant
- deep threads to increase bone-to-implant contact,
- rough surface also (must be below alveolar margin or will increase plaque retention)
- Demineralization of grafts releases growth factors for bone production/remodeling
What are the common complications and how to prevent them?
Oral hygiene necessary to prevent mucositis and peri-implantitis; could result in bone loss as well
Why immediate implant protocol can be used in human but not in dog?
In human patients, when an immediate implant protocol is utilized, the patient is instructed to avoid chewing on the healing implants.
In animals, it is impossible to have the patient avoid chewing on the implant restorations. This necessitates a need for a staged implant protocol, wherein the implants are placed in 2 stages and allowed to integrate for a set time
