JOVD 2013 #1: Temporary Crown Flashcards

1
Q

What is the use of temporary crown?

A
  • protect vital tooth from sensitivity while definitive crown being fabricated (ex. Crown on vital pulp tx or severe abrasion)
  • protect crown preparation of vital and non-vital tooth before placement of definitive crown

Q

Temporary crown are:

A: commonly used in veterinary dentistry because dogs often damage teeth prepared to receive a prosthesis.

B: uncommonly used in veterinary dentistry because of the added time required under anesthesia and the associated risks.

C: Uncommonly used in veterinary dentistry because most crowns in veterinary patients are non-vital, endodontically treated teeth.

D: Commonly result in poorly seated prosthesis due to the cementation and difficulty removing temporary crowns.

C: Uncommonly used in veterinary dentistry because most crowns in veterinary patients are non-vital, endodontically treated teeth.

There are two methods of preparing temporary crowns (Indirect and direct). They are beneficial when the prepared crown is anatomically high risk for fracture prior to fabrication and cementation of the prosthesis and are a method of protecting the vital teeth that have been prepared to receive a crown. Risks include difficulty in removing the crown material and reactions at the abutment/gingival margin.

Indirect method- make impression of the clinical crown before prep. Apply vasoline to tooth after prep, fill impression with temporary crown material (Pro-Temp) and seat on prepped crown – remove and trim margins before cementing.

Direct – add pro-temp directly to prepared tooth after impressions made. Thin and smooth with finishing bur and sanding discs.

Q

What are the potential complications (4) to temporary crown?

A
  • incorrectly prepared temporary may cause
    • plaque retention from irregular surface or margin resulting in gingival inflammation and subsequent bleeding making placement of permanent crown more difficult.
    • interfere with occlusion.
  • Fracture of the temporary crown
  • Damage to underlying tooth when removing temporary crown
