Joshua Flashcards
Be able to discuss the destruction of the Canaanites. Was it anti-NT? Was it entirely consistent with God’s nature? God commanded the annihilation of the Canaanites (Deut. 7:2; 20: 16-17; Joshua 11:15-20).
All sinners are spared second to second ONLY by God’s grace The Canaanites did not heed the warning from God, or the witness of the Patriarchs who dwelled among themIf left in the land they would be a snare for the HebrewsGod had earlier obliterated Sodom, Gommorah, Admah, and Zeboiim
Be able to discuss the findings of Garstang, Kenyon, and Wood at Jericho
• John Garstang was the German in the 1920’s who dug in Jericho. He said as he found the ruin that it was spring when it fell and their was grain in the city, so they didn’t starve, but it was siege that happened quickly. He said it happened like the Bible and that it happened at the right time. • Kenyon came along and said that Jericho wasn’t even there and contradicts Garstang. She misreads her evidence though. • Bryant Wood demonstrated that Kenyon was wrong and Garstang was right.
Be able to discuss some of the significance of Joshua’s long day
• The text indicates that it was supernatural. • The Canaanites were likely praying to the sun and moon to set so that darkness would hide them. Thus the Lord demonstrates that to a new generation that did not see the plagues that He is not only greater than the Egyptian gods but also greater than the Canaanite gods. • Joshua knew that God had power over the sun and the moon because of the 9th and 10th plagues.
Be able to discuss the way that Joshua helped the nation during his own lifetime (as God had helped him) with their fear of the Canaanites
• He dealt with fear verbally. He said “don’t be afraid”• He had his commanders put their foots on the necks of the kings. By putting their feet on the necks of the men they’re finding out that they’re just men. • He had those kings bodies buried in the gate of the city under a heap of stones showing God’s judgment on the king. The Canaanites began to be afraid
