Joints, Synovial Fluid and Cartlidge Flashcards
RECAP- give an example of a fibrous joint.
Cranial sutures
Interossues membrane
Periodontal ligament
RECAP- three types of joint?
Synovial
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
What is a primary cartilaginous joint composed of?
Hyaline cartilage only
What is a secondary cartilaginous joint composed of?
Hyaline and fibrocartilage
Give an example of a primary cartilaginous joint
Epiphyseal growth plate
Give an example of a secondary cartilaginous joint.
Intervertebral discs
Which type of joint has the most movement?
Synovial
What is found in the synovial capsule of the synovial joints?
Synovial fluid
What are glycosaminoglycans or GAGs?
Unbranched polysaccharides which are highly polar and therefore attract water
What are glycoproteins?
Proteins with carbohydrates attached
More protein than carb
What are proteoglycans?
GAGs attached to a core protein
Tends to be more carb than protein
What is the water content of healthy cartilage like?
High, around 75%
->big advantage as gives strength- think in terms of physics, if water is incompressable
Cartilage is avascular. How does it get it’s nutrients?
From the synovial fluid
What produces synovial fluid?
Synoviocytes in the synovium
The synovium has a rich capillary network. What does this allow for?
Direct exchange of oxygen, CO2 and metabolites between the blood and synovial fluid
