Joints Pg 9 Flashcards
Define what human Joints are? [M1P9]
Joints are the place where two bones meet or come together. Joints hold your bones together and allow your rigid skeleton to move.
Name the 3 different types of joints? [M1P9]
- Fibrous | Fixed (minimal or no movement)
- Cartilagenous (slight movement)
- Synovial (lots of movement, full ROM)
Give an example of a Fibrous/Fixed joint? [M1P9]
- In your Cranium there many of them
- Where the Sacrum meets the Coccyx
- Where the Tibia & Fibula join in the ankle
- Where radius and ulna join in the wrist
Which one of these Joints is not relevant to human body? [M1P9]
A. Fibrous
B. Union
C. Synovial
D. Cartilagenous
B. UNION
Define a Cartilagenous Joint in the body and give one example?
Cartilagenous Joints, made up entirely of cartilage (fibrocartilage or hyaline joints). Usually in joints where there is slight movements bones.
Example: Vertebrae in you spinal column, also where the pair of pubis bone join.
Define what a Synovial Joint is? [M1P9]
Synovial Joints are joints where there is very good ROM. The ends of each bone are lined with articular cartilage (hyaline) and is surrounded by a capsule which is filled with synovial fluid to stop friction.
Can you name the 3 most common Synovial Joints, there are 6 types? [M1P9]
- Ball & Socket i.e.hib, shoulder
- Hinge i.e. at your elbow
- Gliding i.e. in your wrist
- Pivot i.e. at Ulna + Raduis ends
- Saddle i.e. at your thumb
- Condyloid i.e. carpals, tarcals
Name this type of Joint and what example is shown? [M1P9]
