Bone Structure Pg 7 Flashcards
Name the outer 4 areas of the bone shown in the image. [M1P7]
- Articular Cartilage
- Epiphysis
- Diaphysis
- Periosteum
In what area is Medullary Cavity on a long bone? [M1P7]
Its in the DIAPHYSIS
In what main area of a long bone do Red Blood Cells get produced? [M1P7]
Produced in the RED MARROW within the SPONGY BONE in the EPIPHYSIS of the long bone, flat bones.
At what average do bones in person stop growing in lenght? [M1P7]
17
Where are Fats stored in long bones and whats the major color of them? [M1P7]
Stored as Yellow Bone Marrow in the Medullary Cavity of the Diaphsis of long bones.
What are the name of the Discs or Growth Plates between the Epiphysis and Diaphysis of long bones? [M1P7]
Epiphyseal Discs - where soft cartilage cells hardens to make cortical bone cells and are pushed down towards the Diaphysis, this is bone growth. Bone growth ends in younger adults of about 17.
What is the thin fibrous membrane that covers the outer surface of most of a long bone and has blood vessels to carry nutrients to the bone and nerves to signal pain if it fractures/breaks? [M1P7]
PERIOSTEUM
True or False - Do bones change over their lifecycle and after their initial growth to adulthood? [M1P7]
YES
When you do excercise or hard work, your bones lay down more bone tissue to deal with higher impact and strain you put your body under. If you stop or do no excercise your bone production reverses. Other factors are lack of nutrician. So Yes bone tissue continuosly increases and decreases throughtout life.
Can you break down the Diaphysis into their areas from Outer to Inner? [M1P7]
- Periosteum
- Compact (Cortical) Hard Bone
- Endosteum
- Medullary Cavity
- Yellow Marrow
What is the Blue/White marble smooth surface at ends of long bones and what is its job? [M1P7]
- Articular Cartilage
- To prevent bone friction in areas where joints occur.
Lack of Articular Cartilage usually results in Arthitis of bones. See Image
What are Shin Spints? [M1P7]
Its classed as a inflammation of the Perioseum on the Tibia (Shin bone). Its usually a Acute pain in the shin and lower leg caused by high impact, typically on hard surfaces, too quickly or without gradual introduction.
Can you breakdown the parts of the EPIPHYSIS of a long long bone without a image to help, starting form inner to outer? [M1P7]
- Red Bone Marrow
- Spongy Bone
- Epiphyseal Discs
- Endosteum
- Compact Hard (Cortical) Bone
- Periosteum
- Articular Cartilage
