Joints of the UE and Their Synovial Classification Flashcards
Sternoclavicular joint (Pectoral girdle)
Sellar or saddle joint (biaxial joint, flex/ext, abd/add, convex and concave articulating surfaces)
Acromioclavicular joint (Pectoral girdle)
Plane or gliding joint (non-axial, flat articulating surface)
Glenohumeral joint (Pectoral girdle)
Ball and Socket joint (Multiaxial: Flex/ext, abd/add, IR/ER, circumduction)
Scapulothoracic joint (Pectoral girdle)
Pseudo-joint (no joint capsule, gliding surfaces formed by the subscapularis and the serratus anterior), necessary for full glenohumeral function
Humeroulnar joint (Elbow)
Hinge joint (uniaxial:flex/ext)
Humeroradial joint (Elbow)
Plane or gliding joint (non-axial, but tricky since it acts slightly as a pivot joint with the head of the radius rotating around capitulum of the humerus during sup/pronation)
Proximal radio-ulnar joint (elbow)
Pivot joint (uniaxial-rounded portion of bone through which axis of rotation is located, which another bone pivots around)
Distal radio-ulnar joint (wrist & hand)
Pivot joint (uniaxial-rounded portion of bone through which axis of rotation is located, which another bone pivots around)
Radiocarpal joint (wrist & hand)
Ellipsoid or condyloid (Biaxial: Flex/Ext, Abd/add,articular surface of one bone has an ovoid convexity sitting within an ellipsoidal cavity of the other bone)
Carpometacarpal joint (wrist & hand) for Pollex (thumb)
Sellar or saddle joint (biaxial joint, flex/ext, abd/add, convex and concave articulating surfaces)
Carpometacarpal joint (wrist & hand) for Digits 2-5
Plane or gliding joint (non-axial, relatively flat articulating surfaces)
Metacarpophalangeal joint (wrist and hand)
Ellipsoid or condyloid (Biaxial: Flex/Ext, Abd/add,articular surface of one bone has an ovoid convexity sitting within an ellipsoidal cavity of the other bone)
Interphalangeal joint (wrist and hand)
Hinge joint (uniaxial:flex/ext)
