Joints of the Thoracic Limb Outline Flashcards
What are some types of joints?
Fibrous, Cartilaginous, Synchondrosis, Symphysis (fibrocartilaginous) and Synovial
Where is one place Fibrous joints are found in the body
sutures of the skull
Where are two places synchondrosis joints are found
Juvenile long bones (growth plate areas) and skull/hyoid apparatus
Where are three places where Symphysis/fibrocartilaginous joints are found
Pelvis, Mandible, intervertebral disc
What is “better” in synovial joints compared to others
they are more moveable
What is unique about the synovial joint
it is a fluid filled cavity between bones
What is the joint cavity filled with
synovial fluid (lubricant)
What is the cartilage inside the joint that prevents the bones from rubbing against one another
Articular (hyaline) cartilage
What two parts make up the outer layers of the joint capsule
Synovial membrane (innermost) and the fibrous layer (outermost)
What two bones does the shoulder joint link?
Scapula and Humerus
What type of synovial joint is the shoulder
Ball and socket
What type of movement does the shoulder allow?
Flexion and Extension (sagittal movement)
What does the joint capsule of the shoulder joint fuse with for stability?
muscular tendons
What does the Medial/Lateral Glenohumeral Ligaments help in the shoulder?
stabilizes the joint
What is the Elbow joint formed by
Condyle of humerus, head of radius, and trochlear notch of the ulna
What type of joint is the elbow?
Hinge joint
What type of movement does the elbow allow
Flexion and extension (Sagittal movement)
What does the Lateral/Medial Collateral ligaments do for the elbow ?
Stabilize joint
What does the lateral/medial collateral ligaments of the elbow prevent?
adduction (moving closer to the body) or abduction (moving away from the body)
What does the lateral / medial collateral ligaments attach together in the elbow
humerus to the radius
What does the annular ligament of the elbow do?
encloses the head of the radius and attaches radius to the ulna
What does the Interosseous ligament unite in the elbow?
radius and ulna
What type of joint is the carpal joint
hinge
How many articular levels does the carpal joints have
3
What are the 3 articular levels of the carpal joint
1.) Proximal antebrachiocarpal joint
2.) Middle Carpal Joint
3.) Carpometacarpal Joint
What does the Proximal antebrachiocarpal joint have articulations between what?
the radius/ulna and the ulnar carpal bone as well as the intermedioradial bone (r=i)
What does the Proximal Antebrachiocarpal Joint allows for what in the carpal joint?
significant movement
What does the Middle Carpal Joint join
the two rows of carpal bones
How much movement does the middle carpal joint allow in the carpal joint
Movement possible
Where is the Carpometacarpal Joint located between?
Between distal row of carpal bones and the metacarpals
How much movement is in the Carpometacarpal Joint?
No Movement!
What does the Lateral and Medial Collateral Ligaments of the carpal joint join?
Joins the carpal bones laterally and medially (lateral and medial stabilization)
What does the Palmar Carpal Ligament of the Carpal Joint cover?
Covers the entire palmar surface of the carpus
What does the Palmar Carpal Ligament prevent?
Prevents collapse of the carpus during weight bearing
What does the Flexor Retinaculum of the carpal joint connect
connects the accessory carpal bone to the medial aspect of the carpus (whole joint)
What does the Distal Accessory Ligament of the carpal joint join
joins the accessory carpal bone to its adjacent carpal and metacarpal bones
Where is the Metacarpophalangeal Joint located between (phalanges)
between the metacarpal and the proximal phalanx
Where is the Proximal Interphalangeal joint located between (phalanges)
Between the proximal and middle phalanx
Where is the distal Interphalangeal joint located between (phalanges)
Between the middle and distal phalanx
