Joints/Bursea Flashcards
What is a joint?
A point where two bones come together in an articulation
What is a synarthrosis joint? What are the three types?
A synarthrosis is a together joint- a place where two bones come together and are separated connective tissue leading to very limited range of motion. Subtypes are:
- syndesmosis (fibrous joints) like the suture of the skull, 2. synchondrosis (cartilaginous joints) like the epiphyseal plate (growth plate), intervertebral discs and symphysis of the pubic bone.
- synostosis (two bones joined by bones) where joint existed during development and grew but was replaced by bone upon cessation of growth- such as the frontal bones and epiphyseal plate.
What is a diarthrosis joint?
A moveable or synovial joint- have a joint cavity with synovial fluid for joint lubrication, a sleeve-like fibrous capsule, a synovial membrane or sac lining the capsule, and an articular surface coated in hyaline cartilage.
What is a hinge joint? Example?
A joint that permits flexion and extension only! Shoulder, elbow, knee etc.
What is a ball and socket joint? Example?
The rounded head of one bone fits into a concavity of another, permitting movement on several axis. Hip and head of femur joint.
What is a bursae? Example?
Closed sacs of synovial fluid separating bone from overlying tendon or muscle that act to reduce friction between structures. Subacromial bursa.
What is arthritis?
Inflammation of a joint
What is synovitis?
Inflammation of the synovial membrane of a joint
What is bursitis?
Inflammation of the bursa
