Joints/Bursae/Synovium Flashcards
Definition of Articulation
where two or more bones come together forming a joint
Synarthroses
“Together Joints”
Syndesmosis Joint
Fibrous Joint
- Ex. Sutures of the Skull; Interosseous Membrane between radius & ulna
Sychondrosis Joint
Cartilagenous Joint - "chondro" = cartilage - Ex. Intervetebral Disc; Epiphysial Plate Temporary Joint --> hyaline cartilage Permanent Joint --> fibrocartilage
Synchondrosis Symphysis
Secondary cartilagenous joint composed of fibrocartilage found between the two pubic bones
Synostosis Joint
Two bones joined together by bone
- may have existed during development as a fibrous or cartilagenous joint but was replaced by bone at growth arrest - i.e. frontal bones & epiphyseal plate
Diarthroses Joint
Synovial (moveable) Joints
- Ex. knee and elbow
Diarthroses Features
- Synovial Space
- Synovial Fluid
- Fibrous Capsule
- Synovial Membrane or Sac
- Synovial membranes produce synovial fluid
- Articular Surface of Hyaline Cartilage (articular cartilage)
Typed of Synovial or Diarthrodial Joints
- Hinge Joints*
- Ball & Socket Joints*
- Pivot Joints (spinal processes)
Bursae & Synovial Tendon Sheaths
- Consists of a closed sac of serous membrane
- Synovial Tendon Sheaths
- inner layer: attached to tendon (visceral layer)
- outer layer: (outer layer)
Synovial fluid found within sac/cavity
Arthritis Definition
inflammation of a joint
Synovitis definition
inflammation of the synovial membrane of a joint
Bursitis definition
inflammation of a bursa
