Joints and Muscles (Ch 2) Flashcards
a place where two bones come togeth
joint or articulation
synovial joints
allow for a wide range of movement and make up 90%of our joints
synovium
inner lining of synovial joint
fibrous joints
fixed or immoveable joints; these joints have no cavity and are connected via fibrous connective tissues
cartilaginous joints
no joint cavity and the bones are connected tightly to each other with cartilage
ex: vertebrae
6 Types of free moving joints:
- Ball and socket
- Condyloid or ellipsoidal
- Gliding
- Hinge
- Pivot
- Saddle
ball and socket
shoulder and hip; provide the widest range of motion in all planes
condyloid or ellipsoidal
these joints allow primary movement in one plane (flexion and extension) and limited in another plane
gliding
carpals of the wrist joint
hinge
limited to flexion and extension; knee and elbow common examples
pivot
joint between atlas and axis bones in your neck; limited rotation
saddle
rock back and forth and side to side with limited rotation; thumbs
