Anatomical Terminology (Ch 2) Flashcards
reference the front of the body
Anterior or ventral
Posterior
refers to the back of the body
the attachment nearest the midline of the body and/or the end attached to the least movable bone
origin
Insertion
the point at which a muscle is attached to a bone moved by that muscle
position aboe\ve
superior
inferior
positioned below
medial
towards the midline of the body
away from the midline of the body
lateral
near the trunk
proximal
distal
away from the center of the body
near the surface
superficial
deep
under the surface
cephalic
pertaining towards the head
caudal
pertaining to the tail end of the body
unilateral/ipsilateral
refers to one side of the body
refers to both sides of the body
bilateral
flexion
joint action where the relative angle between 2 adjacent segments decreases
extension
joint motion is moving from a position of flexion back to or past anatomical neutral
motion or a position extending beyond anatomical neutral or zero degrees
hyperextension
abduction
joint is moving from a position of adduction past neutral (move away)
adduction
joint movement returning from a position of abduction to neutral crossing the midline of the body (move toward)
protraction or scapula abduction
moving shoulder blades away from spine
retraction or scapula adduction
moving shoulder blades toward spine
circumduction
combo of 4 movements: flexion, adduction, extension and abduction
supination
palms face forward (external rotation of radio-ulnar joint)
pronation
palms face backwards (internal rotation of radio-ulnar joint)
inversion
twisting the foot so the medial side of the sole of foot is lifted inwards
eversion
twisting the foot so the lateral side of the sole of the foot is lifted outwards
