Joints and Function Flashcards
What is a Joint?
The Joint, which could also be referred to as an Articulation is a site where two or more bones meet.
They are generally the weakest parts of the skeleton, as it is where there is space and soft tissue ligaments that are weaker.
What is the function of a Joint?
Joints are responsible for holding the skeleton together and also provide the skeleton mobility.
- it is important to note that not all joints move, but all movement of the skeleton takes place at these joints.
What are the 3 ranges of movement?
Synarthrosis, Amphiathrosis, and Diarthrosis.
What is Synathrosis?
Used to describe immobility, or almost being completely immobile.
What is Amphiathrosis?
Used to describe limited mobility or some degree of movement.
What is Diarthrosis?
Used to describe free mobility.
What is a Fibrous Joint?
Fibrous joints are connective tissue or ‘glue’ between the bones, such as Cranial sutures; or teeth.
There are also Wormian bones, which are tinier bones within that assist in enhancing the strength of the glue.
They are Synarthrotic.
What is a Cartilaginous Joint?
Cartilaginous Joints are a Fibrocartilage pad between the bones and are tough but flexible.
Can be described as Amphiathrotic.
What is a Synovial Joint?
A Synovial Joint is a fluid-filled joint cavity that encloses bone ends.
They are very widely found across the body, which include the Shoulder, Elbow, Hip, Knee and so on.
Little strength but can be described as Diarthrotic.
