joints Flashcards
What are synovial joints basic
Where bones come together : forming connections and allows movement
what are synovial joints
They are the most common type of joint found within the body. They allow the greatest degree of movement, they are bounded together by ligaments and seperated by synovial fluid.
what are fibrous joints
Fibrous joints are a fixed joint- no movement (synarthrosis) where collagenous fibrous connective tissues connect 2 bones.: skull sutures
what are Cartilaginous joints
joints that are connected by cartilage- limited movement. Either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage. : Between ribs and sternum
what are Ball and Socket joints
Are a ball shaped surface fits into depressions of other parts, allowing flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, rotation and circumduction : shoulder and hip
what are hinge joints
Are convex surfaces that fit into concave parts, going in single direction movements , allowing flection and extension. : Elbow and Knee
what are pivot joints
Are rounded surfaces that fit into ring formed parts, moving in a rotation. : Cervical vertebrae, atlas bone C1 rotates around axis of C2
what are condyloid joints
Are oval shaped fitting into elliptical cavity parts, moving in a side to side and back and forth motion. : Wrist and ellipsoid joints
What are saddle joints
Are a saddle shaped with the other bone shaped like the rider, moving in a side to side and back and forth motion. : thumb
what is a gliding joint
Are a flat joint, moving side to side and back and forth. : Wrist, carpals, ankle tarsals and vertebrae
Characteristics/ structures- Synovial Joints
Ligaments
Tendons
Hyaline
Synovial Joints
ligaments
strong flexible bands: connect bone to bone-through or around joint- stabilises joints-limiting excess movement range
tendons
tough fibrous tissues: connects musles to bones- transfers force across joint
cartilage
firm slippery tissue:covers end of bones- shock absorber- reduces friction between bones during movement
