An area where two parts of the skeleton connect is called a joint or articulation
helps facilitate movement
most joints in the human skeleton are synovial joints
Describe a synovial joint?
ends of the two bones are joined together within a fluid-filled capsule
greatest degree of mobility of any of the joint-types
ends of bones are protected by layer of cartilage (called articular cartilage)
EXAMPLES: shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, hips, knees, ankles & toes
How are synovial joints classified?
synovial joints are classified into different types based on mechanical function
What two types joints we focusing on?
Hinge joint – elbow, knee
2. Ball-and-socket – hip or shoulder
What are ligaments?
ligaments – a type of connective tissue – help fasten together bones within a joint
Describe cartilaginous joints?
Examples?
i. bones are connected via hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
ii. egs,. Growth plate (epiphyseal plate); between 1st rib & sternum; where hip bones meet
(pubic symphysis); and intervertebral discs
