joints Flashcards
name the three types of joints
fibrous , cartilaginous & synovial joints
Name each of the main material that composes the 3 joints
fibrous ; dense connective tissue e.g cranial sutures
cartilaginous ; fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage
synovial: articular cartilage
What are Symphyses and Synchondroses and what are 3 main differences between them?
theyre types of cartilaginous joints
synchondroses do not move at all whereas symphyses have limited movement
synchondroses ossify but symphses do not
synchondroses dissapears in adults but in symphyses it does not
what do synchondroses separate
separates the ribs from the sternum
where are symphses located ?
between the vertebrae
which joints have the greatest movement
synovial joints
list the 6 types of synovial joints
ball & socket joint ( allows rotation i.e head rotation)
condyloid/ellipsoid joint (moving a finger upwards)
plane joint ( sliding movement)
saddle - allows movement in a circumduction way
hinge
pivot - rotation only (flicking wrist)
‘People Have Purple Coloured Smooth Balls’
What are the 3 main types of cartilage?
Hyaline/articular, Elastic and Fibrocartilage
difference bwetween hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage ?
hyaline cartilage is elastic
fibrocartilage contains more collagen so its strong/withstand force
what are anastomoses ?
they’re reconnections of blood vessels around joints that allow the flow of blood to occur even under extreme compression
what provides stability to joints?
ligaments & muscles
why is flexion in elbow and knee in opposite directions?
because of limb rotation in week 7 and 8 of embryo development
limb evolution saves energy and is more efficient in what?
efficient in locomotion and weight bearing .
what do synovial membranes produce
synovial fluid
what are the two bones in synovial joints separated by?
fibrous capsule
