joints Flashcards
What is a joint
where two bones meet a joint if formed, this can remain quite rigid and immovable, as in the skull - but most joints are free moving to allow a wide range of movement and actions
Types of synovial joints
ball and socket
hinge
Saddle
Pivot
Gliding
condyloid
ball and socket
rounded bone head articulates with the cup-shaped cavity
movement of joint - flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, internal and external rotation
Hinge
goes in two directions - uniaxial
movement of joint - flexion, extension
Saddle
concave and convex bone surfaces align, generally biaxial
movement of joint - flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction
Pivot
uniaxial joint - only allows rotation
movement of joint - rotation of one bone around another
Gliding
two flat bones fly past each other - in a biaxial manner
Condyloid
goes in two directions, allows slight rotation - biaxial
movement of joint - flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, circumduction
